Lagos contractor faces N1.7milloin fraud charges

A building contractor, Saheed Showunmi, who allegedly obtained N1.7 million under the pretext of constructing a house, on Wednesday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

Showunmi is facing a two-count charge of fraud and stealing.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Ezekiel Ayorinde, told the court that the accused, 45, defrauded the complainant, one Mr Shittu Akeem, of N1.7 million.

He said the offence was committed sometime in February 2016 at Oko-Oba Scheme 1 Estate, Agege, Lagos.

Ayorinde said the accused was contracted by the complainant to supervise the construction of his building project.

“The accused collected N1.7 million for the procurement of building materials which he refused to buy and converted the said sum to his own personal use”.

The prosecutor also alleged that the accused collected 30 cartons of marble tiles valued at N350, 000 from one Ikechukwu without paying.

He said that the accused never picked his calls and all his efforts to make him to refund the money proved abortive until he was recently apprehended by the police.

The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 285 and 312 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Showunmi, however, pleaded not guilty.

The offences contravened Sections 285 and 312 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The Section 285 of the law prescribes three years imprisonment for offenders.

A bail of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum was granted to the accused, while the Chief Magistrate, Mrs Omolade Awope, adjourned the case to Feb. 17 for mention.
