Nigeria's Ministry of Health has issued a public advisory following the outbreak of Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) that has spread across the country and mostly affecting States in the upper parts of the country which fall within the African Meningitis Belt.

Other Countries that are facing similar outbreaks at the moment include our West-African Neighbours like Niger, Chad, Cameroun, Togo, and Burkina Faso. The larger African Meningitis Belt consists of 26 Countries that stretch from Senegal, Gambia and Guinea Bissau in the west coast to eastern countries of Eritrea and Ethiopia.

Ninety (90) Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Sixteen (16) States of the Federation are so far affected including Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Nassarawa, Jigawa, FCT, Gombe, Taraba , Yobe, Kano, Osun, Cross Rivers, Lagos and Plateau. The total number of people affected across these States is 2524 with 328 Deaths. So far, a total 131 samples have been confirmed in the Laboratory, out of which a majority are Neisseria Meningitides type C. This current outbreak started in Zamfara State in the 50th week of 2016 (i.e. November 2016)

Information to the Public:
Prevention:
· Avoidance of overcrowding
· Sleep in well ventilated places
· Avoidance of close and prolonged contact with a case/s
· Proper disposal of respiratory and throat secretions
· Strict observance of hand hygiene and sneezing into Elbow joint/sleeves
· Reduce hand shaking, kissing, sharing utensils or medical interventions such as mouth resuscitation
· Vaccination with relevant sero-type of the meningococcal vaccine
· Self-medication should be avoided
Early Diagnosis, Treatment and Isolation:
· Very important that all individuals should acquaint themselves with at least the basic knowledge/understanding of CSM and how it is transmitted and prevented
· Strictly adhere to the advice of Health workers on how to protect oneself as enumerated above
· Prompt seeking for medical/health care as soon as CSM or CSM-Like Illness is suspected
· All Hospitals to ensure that appropriate Diagnoses are made including laboratory confirmation and immediate reporting through the surveillance system
· Commence early treatment as soon as the diagnoses of CSM is made
· Restrict mingling with other people once one is diagnosed as a case of CSM
· All Secondary and Tertiary Public Health Facilities should provide free treatment to all CSM Patients
Finally, the Federal Ministry of Health calls upon the general public to remain calm as the disease Cebro-spinal Meningitis (CSM) is both preventable and curable. Although the cumulative number of people and locations affected may continue to increase, the actual rate of increase has begun to decline in some states indicating that the end of the epidemic is in sight.
All Public Sector Hospitals (Secondary and Tertiary Hospitals) have been directed to provide free treatment for all Cases of Cerebrospinal Meningitis.
We wish to thank all our National and International Development partners (Multilateral and bilateral) who supported us in accessing the relevant CSM Vaccines which have already been deployed to Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina and FCT. We are equally reassured that more Doses are expected and all necessary documentation for the new vaccines arrivals have been concluded.
The Federal Ministry of Health will continue to provide regular feedback to the General Public on the necessary steps to take. Meanwhile, everybody is advised to remain calm and continue to abide by the health advisory being issued periodically.

Emir of Kano vows to get local barber arrested for damaging the private part of a 15 year old bride during circumcision

Emir of Kano has vowed to ensure that the Commissioner of Police in Kano state gets one Mallam Shu’aibu Wanzam, a local barber arrested for damaging the private part of 15 year old bride named Kaltume Ibrahim Mai-Kaji pictured above, during circumcision.

According to the post on the Emir's IG page, Kaltume Ibrahim Mai-Kaji and Aminu Ali, her husband, had spent several years dating before they eventually got married in 2013 in Kano State, when she clocked 15 years.

However, after they got married, Kaltume refused to allow her husband have sexual affairs with her. Anytime she was invited to bed she would decline. Ali had severally complained about his wife’s attitude to his parents, but each time, he would be told to exercise patience. He was always advised to intensify prayers and give his wife sometime to adapt to her new environment and social status. In his quest to solve the problem, Ali had tried several herbs on his wife, but all in vein. Kaltume never slept with him throughout her stay with him. After several unsuccessful attempts, Ali sought the intervention of his father-in-law, Mallam Ibrahim Mai-Kaji, who administered many herbs on her, but there was no improvement. Finally, her father invited one Mallam Shu’aibu Wanzam, a local barber, to circumcise Kultume, thinking that it would solve her problem. Unfortunately, in the process of circumcizing her, Wanzam removed a portion of her private part. As a result of this, she can no longer urinate like a normal person. Kaltume who is 19 years old now, currently urinates through a tube that was carefully strapped above her sex organ, which medical doctors confirmed was completely damaged.

Reacting to the case, the Emir said he wept when the matter was brought to his knowledge.
"When the case was reported me, i summoned the affected family and the ward head of the area to my palace on Monday, March 27, 2017. When Kaltume’s ordeal was narrated to me, I wept  and cursed those who contributed to her condition. I also sacked the ward head for allowing genital mutilation in his area of jurisdiction.  I have directed the Commissioner of Police to arrest Wanzam and whoever had a hand in this heinous crime. They will be punished. If the commissioner fails to do something, I will personally petition the I.G of Police. I will follow this case to its logical conclusion"he said

Aid officials confirm that Landslides have killed at least 154 people in south-west Colombia and left many more injured.

President Juan Manuel Santos, who travelled to the area, said troops had been deployed as part of a national emergency response. He declared a state of emergency in the region.

Reuters news agency said more than 1,100 soldiers and police officers had joined the rescue effort.

The region's governor, Sorrel Aroca, told Colombian media that whole neighbourhoods had been buried. Rescue services said their efforts had been hampered by the continuing bad weather and damaged infrastructure.

Obsessed colleague stabbed woman 20 times when she didn't want to be his girlfriend

How on earth do you claim to be in love with someone then have the heart to harm them just because they do not share your feelings? This is indeed sick. Here's the story of a man, Brian Deakins, 46, who was so obsessed with his friendly female colleague, Deborah Evans, to the extent that he had to resort to violence.
Brian and Deborah met at a work induction in July 2014 when they both started working on the factory floor at AB World Foods in Leigh, Greater Manchester. Deborah noticed he was quiet and on his own so she tried to encourage him to come out of his shell and socialise with other colleagues.

They did not see much after that because they both worked different shifts and he rarely socialised but she kept on being friendly whenever she met him and often encouraged him to come out with her and other friends.
“I got to know him very slowly. He lived with his parents and didn’t get out much,” Deborah said. “All of us, not just me, used to encourage him to come out with us. He was very quiet and didn’t have friends, but he seemed perfectly fine.”
In April 2015, Brian quit his job. Unknown to Deborah that he had fallen in love with her, she sent him a polite message wishing him luck in the future then she started dating another colleague, Jonathan Clarke, who was 13 years her junior. A while later, she got a call from Brian and he called her horrible names.
"Why didn’t you tell me you had a boyfriend, you s***?" he said during the call.
Deborah blocked Brian's number after that and deleted him from Facebook, but the verbal attack did not stop. He sent her a Skype message the next day apologising then in December 2015, he sent another message which she ignored. The next day, he sent the same thing. He continued sending her "Hi, how are you?" every day, sometimes even as much as twice a day. She revealed that she got scared after that and thought it best to ignore him.
On Dec 14th 2015, Brian came to Deborah's home in Manchester and demanded that she give him some DVDs she had promised to lend him. As she handed them over, he lunged forward, forcing his way into her hallway while wielding a knife. He attacked her then, stabbing her 20 times in the arms, head and chest. The blade came away from the handle, but instead of stopping, Brian smashed Deborah’s head against a wall and began to strangle her.
"He just kept telling me he hated me. I could feel my life ebbing away but I vowed to myself, ‘I’m not dying today,’” she said. I think instinct kicked in. With one hand, I prised his fingers from my neck and with the other, I punched him hard between the legs. I’m a small person but I put up a good fight. There was no way I was letting him do that.”
After Deborah kicked him, he jumped back in pain then lifted his foot and stamped down hard on Deborah’s neck until she lost consciousness. When she came round, he was gone. She called Jonathan and an ambulance and was rushed to Manchester Royal Infirmary where doctors told her she’d suffered 20 stab wounds, broken her jaw and fractured 16 ribs.
“It was a miracle I survived,” she said. “Brian was quickly arrested. I had so many questions, but mainly, ‘Why me?’ The police came to interview me and I had to go through it all again, every little detail. I was still covered in blood and my hair was matted and horrible.”
Brian pleaded guilty to attempted murder and was sentenced in June 2016 to 15 years in prison with an extended licence of five years. He was also given a lifelong restraining order, banning him from ever contacting her. Deborah, on her part, surprisingly survived the attack, but she has not been the same since then. Speaking about the change the attack has caused in her life, she said:
“To this day, I cannot understand why his obsessive jealousy drove him to attack me. While he’s behind bars my life has been changed forever. Parts of my face are still numb and I find it difficult to chew. I want to be able to forgive and forget but I can’t.”

She's also been having flashbacks of the horrifying attack, has struggled to eat and speak, living instead on protein shakes because chewing is too painful. She is also struggling to maintain a relationship after she split from Jonathan in April 2016.

“Whenever I walked up the stairs, I’d spot bloody splatters on the walls. I couldn’t open the door to strangers or go out. But then I figured this is my home – I’ve lived here 18 years. Why should I move?” she said.

Deborah, now works with charity Animals in Distress, because she doesn't feel well enough to return to work.

He also stated that he does not know the exact amount the agency has recovered from persons accused of looting public funds. See more of what he said during his screening after the cut.

Ibrahim Magu failed intergrity test, lives a high profile lifestyle- DSS

The Department of State Security, DSS, yesterday night sent out a letter to members of the senate, stating that acting chairman of EFCC, Ibrahim Magu who was rejected by senators today, failed the integrity test carried out on him by the agency. In the report, the agency said it carried out investigations on all the nominees for the board of the EFCC.

It cleared all other nominees except Magu who they raised a red flag on.

They alleged he lived a high profile lifestyle and flies first class which is against President Buhari's directive that no public officer should fly first class. The report alleged that Magu kept close company with persons with questionable characters.

Recall that last year, DSS also sent a letter to the senate accusing Magu of corrupt practices and highhandedness, causing him to be rejected by the senate in December 15th 2016. See copies of the new letter to the senate after the cut...

Nigerians slam Foston Utomi for cryptic post on IG after being ousted for battering his wife

Nigerians have gone on Instagram to verbally attack Foston Utomi after he put up a post following his wife's post accusing him of battery. Just yesterday, Ajoke, Foston's wife of one year, shared a bloody picture of herself and accused her husband of inflicting the injuries on her
She also revealed that she has left him for good and has no intention of going back. She said that the fact he bought her a Range Rover means nothing.

Soon after, Foston posted a cryptic message which, no doubt, was directed at his wife and Nigerians went ham on him. The attacks from Nigerians on Instagram were savage, to say the least.

When you’re holding on to someone who doesn’t want to stay. – There are certain people who aren’t meant to fit into your life no matter how much you want them to. And the only ones truly worthy of your love are the ones who stand with you through the hard times and laugh with you after the hard times pass. Maybe a happy ending doesn’t include anyone else right now. Maybe it’s just you, on your own, picking up the pieces and starting over, freeing yourself for something better in the future. Maybe the happy ending is simply letting go and taking a bold step forward. MARC AND ANGEL

Ibrahim Magu reacts to his rejection by the senate, says he will fight corruption until his last day in office

EFCC acting chairman, Ibrahim Magu, says despite his rejection by the senate today, he will continue in his fight against corruption till his last day in office. Speaking with a coalition of civil society groups at the entrance to the National Assembly immediately after his rejection by the senators, Magu said.

"My priority is to fight corruption. My confirmation has not changed anything. We have always been on duty I will work until the last day whether confirmation or no confirmation. The greatest violation against human right is crime against the society and the humanity but everybody has a duty and responsibility to fight corruption and I also has a responsibility. I assure you that we will fight to finish. We will never be deterred because what we are doing is trying to investigate what has gone before and protect the future of our children and our future generation. So, if we don’t work today and fight against corruption, the future is not guaranteed, the future of our children is not guaranteed.  So, we must wake up, where ever you find yourself, fight corruption. Anytime you discover that I am corrupt, expose me.”
Reacting to allegations made against him by the DSS which largely led to his rejection by the senate, Magu said
"Those allegations can not stand the test of time because they can not be proven. You know, you can’t just raise mere allegations without giving the person opportunity to answer you. There is issue of fundamental human right and the right of fair hearing is there. Up till this time, DSS has not called me and I am even surprised that the same report is coming back and this time around it is signed by somebody. I doubt the genuineness of that report. But I think we need to identify those who have the interest of this country at heart.”
